Finalmente lo fue.
Drácula Desencadenado es un buen libro que presenta "ideas frescas" de un tema y un personaje altamente tratado, usado, formado y deformado cientos de miles de veces. Proporcionar ideas creativas en un tema que para muchos es ya agotado, tiene mucho mérito. Brian Aldiss ha escrito más de cien libros y casi todos relacionados a la Ciencia Ficción. Su trabajo quizás con más resonancia fue el guión que construyó junto a Kubrick sobre "Inteligencia Artificial", llevado a la pantalla después por Steven Spielberg.
Con la lógica que les caracteriza a los escritores de este género, Aldiss cuenta cómo un científico y empresario que trabaja con alta tecnología, de apellido Bondeland, logra construir un sistema revolucionario que "abre" cierto espacio dimensional sin lectura de tiempo, en el cual se puede insertar todo tipo de materia para conservarla y disponer de ella a libre antojo. Sus fines son comerciales: vender esos "espacios" dimensionales para ubicar allí depósitos de basura radioactiva y así no ensuciar más la órbita del planeta. Sin embargo como el gobierno y sus críticos se dan cuenta, lo que tiene en sus manos es lo más próximo a una máquina del tiempo de lo que jamás se haya logrado hasta ahora, aquí inician sus problemas. Paralelamente un paleontólogo patrocinado por el mismo Bondeland, hace el descubrimiento científico del siglo: un cuerpo o estructura ósea con dimensiones humanas que data de más de 25 millones de años.
Ambos hechos aparentemente inconexos son la parte de ciencia ficción del libro, lo que mágicamente les une después, es la parte fantástica. Ocurren apariciones fantasmales y fenómenos inexplicables que finalmente arrastran al protagonista a una aventura, podríamos decir neo gótica, que le lleva a través del tiempo al futuro posible y al pasado de la época victoriana. Conoce al mismísimo Bran Stocker y lucha con él.
La pregunta que propone la trama podría ser: ¿será posible que los vampiros no fuesen inmortales realmente, sino que viajasen por el tiempo a libre antojo?, eso explicaría, por ejemplo, por qué son vistos en una y otra época a lo largo de la historia. La debilidad del libro no está en su trama ni en sus ideas, sino que en su narración (para mi punto de vista). Los primeros capítulos con cautivantes, pero a mitad de camino se va volviendo lento y extendiendo a la fuerza ideas ya claras. También pudo haber hecho una más interesante relación entre Stocker y Bondeland, debido a las personalidades que les brinda a cada quien, pero queda floja dicha mancuerna. Sin embargo y como dije al principio, sus ideas brindan un buen refresco al tema vampírico y "dracuniano", dándole un toque científico moderno al tema.
